A pair of Art Deco era statement jet earrings, each featuring a smaller diamond shape faceted piece of jet with a flat base to the top measuring approx 25mm x 25mm, attached to a larger articulating diamond shaped piece of jet with irregular facets and a flat base measuring approx 55mm x 45mm and attached to gold shepherds hooks.
Jet is an opaque black coalified fossilized driftwood of a Jurassic period tree. Jewellery grade jet has been sourced from Brittish and Spanish deposits. During the Medieval era jet was used by the monks of Whitby Abbey in Northern Yorkshire to carve rosaries and religious jewelry. The popularity of jet took off in the Victorian era due to demand for mourning jewellery, which saw extensive mining of the Whitby deposits.
